Playa Cacao

A small beach community, just across from Golfito's ancient banana and cocoa harbour in the south Pacific part of Costa Rica. Here time seems to stand still, And the atmosphere is laid-back. The green hills, the blue water of the bay and the friendly people of Playa Cacao all give a special feel to this place. The village Playa Cacao is made up of a of few houses, a school and two restau-rants, all scattered along the coast line. The backyard of Cacao is the jungle of the “refugio fauna silvestre Golfito” , this small protected corridor is a home to birds, mammals, fruit trees and of course to old Cocoa trees, the trees that gave Playa Cacao its name.

Playa cacao and the wildlife refuge are surrounded by the waters of the Gulfo Dulce. The fishing in these waters is incredible: merlin, tuna and swordfish ab-ound in the gulf. A little farther away lies the beach town of Zancudo. It’s definitely worth a visit; it is also on the way to surf towns like Pavones and Punta Blanco. Puerto Jimenez is situated on the other side of the Golfo Dulce. About half an hour from Playa Cacao by boat, Puerto Jimenez is the entrance to the Peninsula de Osa. The Peninsula de Osa is famous for its great national park Corcovado.
